Below is a series of recommended mounting heights for fire alarm system equipment including different types of smoke detector including optical beam detectors and heat detectors.

Ceiling mounted smoke detectors should be mounted at least 6 inches away from where the ceiling meets the wall. Wall mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling to the top of the alarm. The detector shall be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to rooms used for sleeping purposes and in every sleeping room.
